“That’s the main reason why I’ve waited three weeks between the Tramway and the Shannon,” Begg said.

“The seven-day back-up agrees with her … it’s worked before with the Flight Stakes last year.

“I’m hoping history can repeat itself.

“For a Group One winner I think she is fairly handicapped in the Epsom.”

Begg has taken plenty of confidence from the fact she only went down a nose to Sincero in the Tramway.

“The Tramway has turned out to be a great form race with Sincero and (third-placed) Thankgodyou’rehere coming out and winning,” Begg said.

It appears as if Secret Admirer will be given 52.5kg in the Epsom Handicap, a distinct advantage considering the likes of fellow three year old Group 1 champion Ilovethiscity will have 55.5kg.

Sincero remains the 2011 Epsom Handicap favourite though with Ilovethiscity behind Secret Admirer in third.

From there there’s a gap back to trusting, Foreteller, Fast Clip and Thankgodyou’rehere.

Sincero is on the road to the Cox Plate with the 2011 Epsom Handicap likely to be used as a high quality lead in event.

He’s already a Group 1 champion after winning the Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane last year so the lure of one if not two more Group 1′s is a remarkable thought.

Even more remarkable is the fact the horse cost a tiny $8000 when he was first purchased by a syndicate of owners in the Sutherland Shire.

Now days the four year old is valued in a price range nearing $1.5 million.

There were no obvious signs of greatness that the owners saw that everybody else missed either, he was purchased on the back of sentimental reasons as syndicate manager Greg De Vries explains.

‘‘Sincero is the younger brother of Zarzeus (son of Umatilla), which was a handy two-year-old and which won a few races before struggling a bit since,’’ De Vries said.

‘‘We’ve since become close to the breeder Roger Gorham.’’

After showing a bit of promise on the country circuit a few started to take notice and the syndicate reached 10 members including Cronulla Sharks director and former player Paul Walker.

‘‘There was no problem finding blokes from the shire to join the syndicate … and to think this Sincero cost next to nothing!,” Walker said.

Offers were already at the $1 million mark before the horse reached the Brisbane winter carnival but the owners persisted with racing him, a fantastic move as at start 13 he bounced back from a QTC Cup defeat to win the Stradbroke Handicap.

It was the first Group 1 victory for trainer Stephen Farley as well and you can bet now he has a taste it’s something he’ll be coming back for more of.

He’s the favourite to pick up a second one in Sydney in only a matter of weeks as he tops the betting for the 2011 Epsom Handicap.

Last weekend’s win has only strengthened that position as he fields a flood of money in the early markets.

While that win was across a 1400m journey, the same as the Stradbroke, Farley is confident he can not only get the 1600m of the Epsom Handicap but also out to 10 furlongs for the Cox Plate.

‘‘Sincero has improved physically, rounded up across the back and thickened up in the shoulders, and has matured,’’ Farley said.

“A lot will depend on how he performs on Saturday and how he pulls up,” Farley said.

“There are a few options, we can stay for the Epsom and then go to Melbourne and back up a week later and then it is a fortnight in to the Cox Plate.

“Or we can head to Melbourne after Saturday and run in the Underwood Stakes. He has got to be very competitive to warrant a trip to Melbourne straight away.”

From the sounds of that for Sincero missing the Epsom would only be a possibility should he win the Tramway or finish in the top three.

Tasked with getting him that win is regular rider Chris O’Brien who enjoyed the same incredible journey to success last season.

O’Brien was with Sincero as he embarked on a six race winning streak leading up to the QTC Cup.

That was where  his association ended though, the light weights allocated to Sincero forcing O’Brien off his back.

It was bitter sweet for O’Brien to watch on as Sincero first flopped to finish 11th in the QTC Cup and then bounce back to win the Stradbroke Handicap.

He will once again be the first choice jockey throughout his spring program however a lot will depend on handicapping as to whether or not he’ll be able to follow the horse throughout the entire campaign.

The Epsom Handicap itself is worth $500,000 and contested across a 1600m trip at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

It’s the headline act of the biggest day during the Sydney spring racing carnival and runs in partnership with three other Group 1′s including the Spring Champion Stakes, the Flight Stakes and the Metropolitan.

Not only are the who’s who of Sydney’s best trainers out in force in the Epsom Handicap nominations but so too are plenty of interstate trainers with the significance of the Epsom Handicap not lost on a national scale.

As it stands there are 121 horses on the list of Epsom Handicap nominations meaning there’s still a lot of water to go under the bridge before we determine a final field.

That being said we can still pinpoint a few nice looking early chances and a number which are well worth a mention.

Anacheeva is a Group 1 winner and looks to be well suited over 1600m. The horse is starting up this weekend in the Memsie Stakes so they could certainly be one to watch.

Brazilian Pulse ran a shocker first up on the weekend but at her best she’d be with them here. On current form you’d say no chance but don’t take your eye of her in the lead up.

Fanjura surprised many with its runs last prep but if it keeps improving there’s no reason it won’t be around the money in the Epsom. Mid pack horse with plenty of speed late, could be a real bolter.

Glass Harmonium was a star during the Brisbane winter carnival and his forward striding tough attitude is a perfect Epsom fit. The big grey European import is a hard horse to miss and he’ll definitely run a race should he get to Randwick.

Lucha Libre is very lightly raced but at those starts has impressed a lot. Won in black type company at just his second start, look to see how well he returns.

My Kingdom Of Fife was arguably the find of the autumn and if he comes back in top shape he’ll be a hard one to overlook. Incredibly impressive horse and he’ll get the mile no troubles.

Playing God will fly the flag for Western Australia, something he’s already done brilliantly well last season. He can mix it in group company and hopefully as a four year old he’s come back even better.

Startsmeup is already into his prep and will need a bit of stamina to make it to the Epsom. That being said the Queenslander has heart and last start ran a game third in a good field in Sydney.

Tullamore won during the Brisbane winter carnival and Gai Waterhouse has a big opinion of this horse. Probably suited to something longer but depending how quickly he comes back from a spell the Epsom could fit in nicely.

Obviously none or all of these horses could end up in the Epsom handicap field let alone win the race on October 1st.

Altius has won two in a row since placing on debut for the Waller camp and is showing every sign that he’ll continue to improve over the course of the spring carnival.

While it’s certainly acknowledged that the horse still has a long way to go before making it to Group 1 level, the old saying that ‘all you can do is win’ certainly comes into play.

This weekend it will be a Benchmark 90 at Rosehill Gardens over 1500m against a field boasting black type experience.

A win there and it’s a case of then taking a step up to the next level and seeing just how far he can go.
“Provided he continues to do well we’ll just keep stepping him up through the grades,” Stable Representative Liam Prior said.

The step after this will be the Group 3 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle, that’s where they’d truly see if he could handle an Epsom Handicap.
“If he can win next start a race like the Cameron would be right up his alley,” Prior said.

“He would obviously have to equip himself well in a race like the Cameron,” Prior said.

“At the moment were just stepping him up through the grades and if he can continue to do that we could find himself in a race like the Epsom with a light weight.

“The Randwick mile is a tough mile and he has shown in the past he can get over a bit of ground. If he can perform well again next start up in grade we would be mad not to think it is a race for him.”

The Epsom Handicap provides big stallion proving opportunities to Altius who is already a somewhat desirable stud prospect as he’s the half brother to Elvstroem and Haradasun.

“As a colt he is a true gentleman,” Prior said.

“He has a great temperament and hopefully he can go onto bigger and better things and continue the success for the family.”

“Circles Of Gold [dam], the success she has had on the racetrack is unbelievable. He is obviously very well bred with good relations, if he was to go on and win a race like that [Epsom Handicap] he would make a very successful transition to stud.”

Altius was formerly trained by Tony Vasil with the owners transferring him to Waller hoping that a change of techniques might be what he needed to kick start his career.

“They are really terrific owners, Frank Tagg, Frank Meduri and Gary Moffitt,” Prior said.

“They just leave it to us and it is really good dealing with guys like them that have obviously had such tremendous success on the racetrack.”

Altius would become the fourth horse form the Waller stable to launch an Epsom Handicap charge with Foreteller, Triple Elegance and Red Tracer all set for the Group 1 event.

Forteller is one which has received plenty of attention already.
“He [Foreteller] will probably go to a 1300m race on September 10,” Prior said.

“We will freshen him right up, drop him back in distance and top him off nicely before he probably goes to the Epsom.”

While he is yet another European import for Waller, his style of racing is slightly different to what we’ve seen in the past and more indicative of the new tactics being employed by the stable.
“We’re buying horses the last 12 to 24 months with higher ratings and also stretching our horizons to not just horses coming out of England but also France and Ireland,” Prior said.

“A lot of them when they get here are still pretty one paced but if you can train a bit of speed into them and they respond well they can carry that through to their races as they have a better turn of foot.

“We’ve changed the dimension a bit with what we’re looking for. Instead of buying solely the mile and a quarter to mile and a half horses now we are also looking for the imported horses who can be competitive over the 1600m distance or event shorter and it seems to be working at the moment.”

He’s won three in a row since his arrival in Australia and there’s no reason that can’t continue into his new campaign.

“After a short break he has come back and is in terrific order,” Prior said.

“He is going really well and we are really happy with him.

“He was a horse who had a much higher rating than what we had bought in the past. We are buying horses who have higher ratings.

“His first Australian start was straight into Saturday grade whereas before we had horses who commenced in the midweeks where they could win two or three races before stepping up to Saturday class.

“He came over here with a rating close to 90. With his latest wins his rating is now up to 106/107.”
