Jockey Tommy Berry is confident that Snoopy will only continue to improve as he steps out in trip through the forthcoming Spring Carnival; underlining a race like the 2016 Epsom Handicap (1600m) as a possible target.
Snoopy has posted a number of commendable results for Team Hawkes through a total of ten career starts since debuting in early 2015; claiming four wins and a minor for a total of $123,000 in prize money.
Jumping from the gates well in the ClubsNSW BM92 (1100m) first-up on August 13th, the Lope De Vega gelding was caught towards the tail of the field and receive no luck in transit, but mustered a smart late turn of foot to run on for a credible fourth.
Berry told Racing Ahead that he was thrilled with the feel offered up by Snoopy first-up on Saturday and believes he will only take benefit from the run.
“He was very unlucky there. We got caught up on the fence at an important part of the race and didn’t get out until past the 400m,” Berry said.
“For him to still pick up and sprint, run fourth and beat point four of a length, he’s done a great job.
“There’s betting things in store for him. He’ll obviously step up over a little bit further as well. He was running over 1400m and a mile last preparation, so he’s got a lot of improvement there.”
Snoopy won a Seymour minor over 1209m on debut in January last year, but was immediately returned to the paddock with a view towards a spring three-year-old campaign.
Resuming in August for consecutive wins in a pair of Victoria minors over 1300m and 1400m respectively Snoopy was unable to make anything of an impact when debuting in black type company for ninth in the Listed Pin & Win Stakes (1400m) on September 12th, but responded with a smart performance for fourth in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).
Returning to the paddock after running tenth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), Snoopy resumed this year for success in the Hille’s Home Extensions Handicap (1200m) and third in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m), but failed to fire when eleventh in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).
