Fifteen talented milers remain in contention for Saturday’s featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m); offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Winx ($2.90) has returned to racing in typically slick form this time and remains clear favourite for success in 2015 Epsom Handicap betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Sadler’s Lake ($7.50), Lucia Valentina and Silverball; currently sharing the third line at $8.50 quotes.
Will Winx justify her clear favouritism and post a second win at the highest level in the 2015 Epsom Handicap, or will one of her many talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Lucia Valentina ($8.50)
Two-time Group 1 champion Lucia Valentina has largely produced her campaign-best efforts to date in her third-up run, and will contest the 2015 Epsom Handicap after finishing sixth in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and fourth in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) this time. A noted spring performer, the Savabeel mare returned in 2014 for success in the Tramway Stakes; progressed to a hapless run for sixth in the George Main Stakes before charging home to take the out the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m). allocated the ideal barrier 4 and confirmed to be partnered by in-form Hong Kong hoop Zac Purton, there is an awful lot to like about Lucia Valentina’s chances in the 2015 Epsom Handicap, particularly at current odds.
Winx is undoubtedly one of the class runners of the 2015 Epsom Handicap field, but will need plenty of luck in transit after being allocated the wide and awkward barrier 13. Having returned to winning form in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) three runs into her recent autumn and winter campaign, Winx continued to impress in placing fifth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and second in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) before posting consecutive wins in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m). Having savaged the line for success in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) first-up three weeks ago, the Street Cry will is sure to be given a gem of a ride from Hugh Bowman.
Sons Of John ($17)
Country star Sons Of John was unlucky to be pipped on the line in the Theo Marks Stakes first-up, and appears as though he will relish a return to a mile in the 2015 Epsom Handicap. Posting six wins and five minors through only 16 career starts so far, the Oratorio gelding has returned to racing in career-best form this year; running third in the Katoomba RSL Stayers Prelude (2000m) and winning the Happy Birthday Steve Meyn BM75 (1800m) before posting a career-best success to date in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) on June 7th.
