September 28th, 2015

Kirramosa has returned to form in typically competitive form this time in, and trainer John Sargent has revealed he is considering starting the mare in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick, rather than stepping her up in distance for the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m).

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2013 edition of the Crown Oaks (2500m), Kirramosa returned this time for fifth in the Fairfield RSL Club BM90 (1200m) on August 12th; progressing to fifth in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) before again finishing fifth amongst classy company in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) a fortnight ago.

With a number of leading contenders having been confirmed to bypass the 2015 Epsom Handicap on account of their weights, Sargent told AAP his mare’s favourable handicap along with her proven ability at the distance and class underlines her legitimacy for success in the feature race.

“All of the horses who have been finishing in front of her, horses like Kermadec and Pornichet, are going to Melbourne,” Sargent said.

“And she’s obviously up there with the rest of them.

“She will go to the Epsom or the Craven Plate.

“It’s falling away, the Epsom, but then the 2000 metres of the Craven Plate will suit her.”

Posting four wins and a minor through fifteen career starts so far, Kirramosa stamped her claims as a filly to follow upon debuting in her native New Zealand in early 2013l winning a Matamata minor over 1200m before running on for a close fourth in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Debuting in Australia for fourth in a Canterbury sprint over 1200m in spring, the Alamosa mare continued to impress in running fourth in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) and winning the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) leading into her Crown Oaks triumph.

The 2015 Epsom Handicap final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Tuesday.
