Trainer John Thompson has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by First Seal in the lead-up to her 2015 Spring Carnival campaign, and has revealed the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick in early October could very well figure as a target for the rising four-year-old.
First Seal stamped her claims as one to watch over a standout 2014 Spring Carnival campaign highlighted by success in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) and was unlucky not to add another win at the highest level to her list of achievements through the recent Sydney Autumn Carnival.
Thompson is confident Group 1 glory awaits the talented daughter of Fastnet Rock this time and underlined the 2015 Epsom Handicap, along with races like the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) as legitimate targets this time in.
“We haven’t really got a target for her as yet, we could go to Sydney or Melbourne,” Thompson told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“It will be good to see her back on the track and she is around 80 percent for this first trial.
“Like a lot of these spring horses, it is a matter of just getting them back and working out the best path.
“I would say her first run will be in Sydney and then there is plenty of options around the mile trip.”
Running fourth in a Canterbury minor over 1250m on debut before immediately returning to the paddock, First Seal broke through for a maiden win in the Daily Press Group Maiden (1100m) upon resuming last spring; running second to Sweynesse in a Rosehill minor over 1400m before taking out the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) a fortnight prior to the Flight Stakes.
Returning to the paddock after finishing second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), First Seal ran a close second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) first-up this year; taking out the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at a jog a fortnight later before finishing second in each of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).
