Returning to the track in exceptional form this time in, classy Chris Waller-trained gelding He’s Your Man will undoubtedly face his biggest racing test do date in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) this weekend, but is sure to be boosted by confirmation renowned Hong Kong –based hoop Joao Moreira will take the ride.
Unlucky to finish second to Australian jockey Zac Purton in the latest race to the Hong Kong Jockeys Premiership, Moreira is currently considered one of the world’s leading riders and will approach Super Saturday on a hit-and-run mission; immediately returning to Hong Kong for a Sunday book of rides.
Yet to partner to horse in either work or competitively, Moreira said told The Daily Telegraph he is looking forward to taking the ride on He’s Your Man in the Royal Randwick feature race and is confident of success after watching the five-year-old’s comfortable victory in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) last time out.
“I got the call a couple of weeks ago about riding, and he seems a very nice horse, and the way he won last start impressed me,” Moreira said.
“I’m excited to get to chance to sit on top of him. I’ll try to find out as much as possible about him.”
Chris Waller was thrilled to have booked the leading hoop for arguably his leading chance in the 2014 Epsom Handicap, and is confident the pair will be tough to beat come Saturday.
“He’s a world-class jockey who is in the peak of his career,” Waller said.
“I’m still learning about the horse, but I will say he had a month between his first and second runs and another month between his second and third-up runs.”
Beginning his racing career under the guidance of leading French trainer Alain De Royer Dupre before transferring to the care of Waller at the conclusion of his 2013 preparation, He’s Your Man is yet to finish outside the places in four starts this time in, highlighted by impressive victories in both the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) and Kingston Town Stakes.
