September 29th, 2014

Unable to return to the winner’s circle in three competitive starts this time in, jockey Glyn Schofield is confident trainer Chris Waller will have champion miler Boban in peak racing condition when lining up for this weekend’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Securing three Group 1 victories, all over a mile throughout his 26 start career to date, Boban charged home down the outside to win the 2013 edition of the Epsom Handicap by a short nose ahead of champion mare Streama and in-form runner Toydini.

Favourite to take out the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) last time out before finishing a somewhat forgettable fifth, Schofield said he is not sure why the Bernardini gelding did not hit the line hard, but is confident a strong barrier trial last week and continued guidance from champion trainer Chris Waller is convert into a return to competitive form in the Epsom Handicap on Saturday.

“I don’t really know why he didn’t hit the line last start because his trademark is he doesn’t give up,” Schofield told The Daily Telegraph.

“The gap actually opened up, it was a beautiful run for me, but if you watch the race again from the 150m he started to lose ground.

“In the Epsom last year he came right down the outside and people may think it is the only way he likes to run.

“But at Caulfield last spring, he threaded his way through the field and he has done it in other races. He’s not scared of taking a gap; he’s not scared of anything.

“There is none better than Chris Waller at getting them to improve.”

Contesting a total of nine wins and two minors over his career so far, Boban was without doubt the standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival; finding the line in the clear in each of his five starts, capped by the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 9th.

Adding the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) to his impressive record over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, the gelding out of Kenbelle finishing a close fourth in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) first-up before placing fifth in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in his only other start prior to the Makybe Diva on August 30th. is currently offering the best odds on all major races through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, including the Epsom Handicap!
