August 11th, 2014

Securing an impressive total of four wins from just five competitive race starts so far, trainer Anthony Cummings has revealed the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on October 4th will feature as the major target for As Needed through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival following a resounding first-up victory on Saturday.

Jumping from the gates well in the Instagram @ATC Races 3.y.o+ (1300m) at Randwick on Saturday, As Needed settled in ideal position on the heels on the race’s early leaders; finding a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight and strolling clear to finish close to two lengths in the green of Society Man and You’ll Never.

Outlining the Group 2 Tramway Handicap (1400m) and Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) as likely targets in the lead-up to the Epsom Handicap, Cummings said and appearance in the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) may also come to fruition should the Stratum gelding’s form warrant acceptance.

“I think (the Epsom) is the logical step. He’s going to be well down in the weights in the race this year. It’s the logical target for the Sydney spring,” Cummings told TVN.

“He came through the race without any problems,” he added.

Debuting with an impressive six length victory in the Yellowglen Handicap Maiden (1200m) on March 29th, As Needed appeared to be out of his depth when eighth in 3.y.o+ (1200m) a fortnight later, but responded in the best way possible in securing back-to-back victories in the Ascend Sales Trophies 3.y.o+ (1300m) and Blackwoods New Catalogue 3.y.o+ (1500m) on May 10th.
