Cluster to Target 2014 Epsom Handicap

July 16th, 2014

A notable performer through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Peter Snowden has confirmed exciting colt Cluster will contest just his second race since transferring to the Randwick trainer’s new stable this weekend, ahead of a busy preparation geared towards the featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 4th.

Ending his tenure with Darley Australia following the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival, Snowden took over the care of Cluster from trainer Anthony Cummings, who saddled the Fastnet Rock colt to two minor places from six appearances on course.

Eyeing the BM80 Handicap at Rosehill Gardens over 1200 metres on Saturday, Snowden said he is pleased with the form and work produced by the rising four-year-old and will continue a slow build-up to the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

“He’s in good order, I’m happy with his work, he’s ticking along nicely and Saturday is just another race for him to see where he fits in,” Snowden told The Daily Telegraph.

“I am mindful of how far away the main races are, so I’m trying to spread his runs a bit.

“The longer they’re out, and being a colt, the harder it is to get them fit. That’s why I’ve left it three weeks since his first-up run.

“We’re only just into July, so I don’t want to have too many races before the main ones come, if he’s up to them.”

Debuting with a fair run for sixth amongst classy competition in the TAB Ipad App Plate (1100m) in April of 2013, Cluster was unlucky not to break through for a maiden race win through a still-impressive spring preparation; finishing second in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) first-up and third in the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) most notably before fading in the season-ending Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Yet to appear in early betting markets for the 2014 Epsom Handicap, Cluster is sure to cause serious ripples if continuing his success at Rosehill this weekend.

A notable performer over Group-level events during autumn, Messene is currently tied $9 favourite for the 2014 Epsom Handicap with Weary, ahead of 2013 champion Boban ($13).
