A southern spring campaign beckons for Queensland galloper Sizzling and one of his key targets will be the Group 1 2013 Epsom Handicap (1600m).
Last seen running seventh in the Stradbroke Handicap on June 8, trainer Kelso Wood has ambitious plans for the rising four-year-old.
The Cox Plate is a lofty goal but before that Wood is keen to chase the $500,000 Epsom at Randwick in October.
“Sizzling will be aimed at the Epsom then go to Melbourne,” Wood said.
The Snitzel colt wasn’t at his best at Brisbane’s winter carnival but still managed to beat a host of quality three-year-olds to claim the Group 2 Queensland Guineas.
That win saw him start among the favourites for the Stradbroke but a wide barrier had the youngster battling from the outset.
Sizzling was a star juvenile the year before, goining undefeated in a winter campaign that included victories in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Group 1 TJ Smith.
Wood has always held the sprinter-miler in high regard and even took him to Melbourne last spring. While the future stallion prospect didn’t manage to find his way into the winner’s stall, he still reeled off solid performances to take fourth-place honours in the Blue Sapphire and finish sixth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.
From 17 starts Sizzling has recorded seven wins and four minor placings and collected nearly $1.3 million in prizemoney.
Accompanying Wood’s stable star in a southern campaign will be sprinting gelding Someday who broke through for his first victory at stakes level in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap last month.
