Jockey Kathy O’Hara will look to win her second Group 1 in the 2012 Epsom Handicap tomorrow with her mount Monton.
Monton is yet to show his top form this spring, finishing no better than sixth in his three runs so far this preparation.
The Catbird gelding finished ninth in his most recent start in the $151,000 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle Racecourse on September 19, 2012.
Monton has won six of his 26 race starts in total and has earned more than $475,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
The six-year-old is currently paying odds of $61 to win the 2012 Epsom Handicap and is the second least backed runner in the field.
O’Hara won her first Group 1 title aboard Ofcourseican in the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse during this year’s autumn racing carnival.
In doing so she became just the fourth female jockey to win one of Australia’s top feature races.
O’Hara is hopeful she can continue the successful affiliation with trainer Ron Quinton, who trains both Ofcourseican and Monton.
“He’s been incredibly loyal to me keeping me on that mare last time, and giving me another opportunity again in this horse,” O’Hara said.
“Ronny doesn’t owe me anything so I’m incredibly thankful for him to give me the opportunity to ride a horse like Monton.
“I’m hoping I can repay his loyalty.”
The jockey is confident that Monton has the ability to win the 2012 Epsom Handicap, despite his recent performances.
“As a jockey you get on board knowing the (horse is) fit and prepared, and Ronny does that as well as anybody,” she said.
“I’ve seen (Monton) race and seen how he runs, and any little quirks that the horse has, I’ve no doubt Ronny will let me know.
“It’s just about knowing your form, your horse and horses around you.”
