After being withdrawn from the Missile Stakes last weekend the Chris Waller trained Pressday will finally get his chance to prove he’s a worthy 2011 Epsom Handicap starter.
The frustrating four year old resumes after an up and down career which has been near perfect sometimes and completely demoralising at others.
During his two year old season he was nothing short of dominant, a three run campaign over the Brisbane winter carnival returning three victories including a Group 1 TJ Smith triumph.
Expectedly this led into a three year old year where he was regarded as the next big thing.
Unfortunately that never eventuated and his autumn season in particular fell well short of expectations.
After seeing his promise though many are refusing to give up on him, most notably Eliza Park Stud which has booked him already as a future stallion.
To prove his worth though he needs a black type win this spring and a Group 1 Epsom Handicap victory would be a dream result.
First things first though and he has to get over his race tomorrow in the Starlight Stakes at Rosehill.
Waller isn’t getting carried away with his chances but says he’s in the form to win the race.
“I think he is coming good and I think he will be very competitive Saturday,” Waller said.
“He has taken a little time to get right, we virtually had to clean the slate and start all over with him. Not much went right last preparation, wide barriers and wet tracks and he just wouldn’t settle.
“There looks to be good speed engaged on Saturday and that should help him relax and hit the line.
“I had high hopes for him last time in, I think he is Group class so I’d certainly like to see him be right in the mix in this Listed race.”
It certainly won’t be an easy event to win with a number of proven racehorses in the field.
The current market favourite is Master Of Design hovering around a $4.50 quote at online bookmaker Luxbet.
You’ll be offered pretty much equal money for Soul with Pressday one spot further back.
Atomic Force looms as a big danger though, the Group 1 champion at a healthy looking $7.
Pressday isn’t the only potential Epsom Handicap runner going around for Waller tomorrow, Foreteller also set to prove its worth in the Premier’s Cup Prelude.
“I hadn’t planned to back him up so soon after his last start but then there wasn’t really a suitable race for another four weeks so I decided to put him in,” Waller said.
“He will take plenty of improvement fitness wise from the last run.
“I am just not sure whether he is a horse that is looking for further or whether we freshen him up for the Epsom Handicap over a mile.
“Saturday will tell us a lot more but he is a horse with plenty of ability.”
Waller is yet to get on the board this season so he’s definitely one to follow tomorrow as his first win won’t be far away.
He’s all but a shoe in to score at least one at Rosehill tomorrow so the odds look in favour of both Pressday and Foreteller.
